The geriatric adult population is expanding rapidly in the United States, with more of these patients expected to visit the dentist in the coming years. Understanding the dental community’s preparedness and comfort treating this demographic is timely. The increasing number of epidemiological research revealed the huge impact that oral health care has on the overall health of the elderly population. The September 2022, Journal of the American Dental Association article concluded there is a need for dentist to continue to learn about management, dental products and clinical care to all ambulatory adults as well as medically and mentally compromised older adults. Hence, Geriatric dentistry comprises of the delivery of dental care to older adults with comorbidities (i.e., Alzheimer’s, Cardiovascular Diseases, etc.) and cognitive impairments. The dentist should be able to provide a diagnosis, prevention, management and treatment of oral healthcare issues associated with the elderly population. As the importance of geriatric dentistry continues to be recognized, the introduction of mobile and teledentistry has also received increased attention.
This CE webinar will review diagnosis, prevention, management, treatment and clinical concerns for providing oral health care to the medically and mentally compromised adult individuals.
