The post and core has undergone many changes throughout the last few decades. Many of us were taught cast gold post and cores in dental school, only to switch to direct placed metal posts after graduation to save an appointment. To keep anterior teeth from looking gray, many switched to zirconia posts before learning they may cause root fractures due to their stiffness. Modern post and core technique features fiber reinforced resin posts with a dentin like elasticity, paired with a dual-cured nano-hybrid core build-up material. Upon completion of this CE Activity, the student will be able to: understand an overview and history of the evolution of dental posts and cores; identify the strengths and weaknesses of various kinds of dental posts - metal, zirconia, carbon fiber, resin etc.; identify various choices and benefits of current core materials to be used in conjunction with posts for complete build-up.
