Currently, an increased demand for clinically convenient post-and-core-systems to replace lost tooth structure has provided the clinician with a plethora of simplified “one-visit” post-and-core restorative options. Thus, it is understandable that clinicians have uncertainties about selection of restorative materials and techniques to achieve optimal results for post-and-core build-up procedures. Today, the clinician can choose from a variety of user- friendly post-and-core systems for different endodontic restorative, and esthetic requirements. However, no single system provides the perfect restorative solution for every clinical circumstance, and each situation requires an individual evaluation.

This presentation will provide the clinician, technician and auxiliary the materials and techniques necessary to provide retention and resistance for the post-and-core system. Also, it will provide a detailed discussion of the systems available, and the design principles necessary for selection of restorative materials. This analysis and review of aesthetic post systems will furnish the clinician with a precise and predictable method for evaluating each component of the post-and-core system for compatibility with the existing tooth structure. The following illustration will demonstrate these design principles utilizing a fiber-reinforced composite post-and-core system to restore an endodontically treated tooth to achieve optimal integration and structural integrity.   ( disclaimer , ADA CERP Statement )
